The Mersey Ferry is a ferry service operating on the River Mersey in north west England, which is between Liverpool to the east and Birkenhead and Wallasey on the Wirral Peninsula to the west. Ferries have been used on this route not less than 12th century, and continue to be popular for both local people and visitors.
Ferries have featured on the River Mersey for more than 800 years. Ferries were already an established sight before Liverpool was officially declared a town in 1207. As well as taking hundreds of thousands of people out on the Mersey each year, Mersey ferry also operate a range of exciting and informative Liverpool attractions along the riverside as well as trips along the magnificent Manchester Ship Canal.
The current fleet has two vessels. A third ferry, Royal Daffodil has been in service til 2012. The current ferries initially came into service in the 1960s and were named Mountwood and Woodchurch. Both ferries have been widely renovated and renamed Royal Iris of the Mersey and Snowdrop. The service is managed by Merseytravel, under the “Mersey Ferries” brand.
